The Republican slate in Putnam Valley handily defeated the Democrats on Election Day, with the Grand Old Party nabbing the Town Supervisor, Town Justice, Highway Superintendent and Town Clerk seats, as well as two slots on the Town Board.

Current Councilman and Republican Town Supervisor candidate Robert Tendy yielded 1,730 votes, almost double that of the Democratic challenger, Councilwoman Wendy Whetsel, who garnered 929 nods.

“We have a lot of work to do,” said Tendy after the final results were announced at the German-American Club in Putnam Valley. “And we’re going to do it.”

Republican Town Board Candidates Eugene Yetter and Robert Cinque earned spots on the board, garnering 1,495 and 1,347 votes, respectively.

Democratic opponents Tom Carano and David Spittal netted 1,052 and 1,151 votes.
Come January 1, the Republicans will have a majority on the Town Board, on which Whetsel and Democrat Priscilla Keresy hold seats.

Tendy said the Republicans’ majority on the board will benefit the public greatly.
“This is a victory for people in town. We start tomorrow to try to get the town back on track.”
“We have a lot of work to do and we start tomorrow morning,” echoed Cinque. “We’re going to get to work and get the job done.”

Whetsel said she looks forward to achieving goals during the rest of her tenure on the Town Board.

“My team and are I very committed,” she said. “I have initiatives and serving on the Town Board will allow me to do that.”

Republican Town Justice Incumbent Louis DiCarlo handily defeated Democratic challenger Eric Lamar Harris by 832 votes (1,694 to 862).

Republicans Eileen Royael and Earl Smith ran for Town Clerk and town Highway Superintendent, respectively, unopposed. Royael garnered 2,412 votes, Smith, 1,758.

Spittal and Carano were unavailable for comment.

Tendy wins; Republicans back in charge in Put Valley

PUTNAM VALLEY - Republicans took back their majority on the Town Board yesterday as Councilman Robert Tendy won the supervisor's seat, beating Democratic Councilwoman Wendy Whetsel, according to preliminary results from the Putnam County Board of Elections.

Two Republican candidates for Town Board seats completed the GOP sweep over two Democrats.

"This is a victory for the people of the town. Everybody on the ticket got in, and we will start working tomorrow," said Tendy, who had gathered with town Republicans at the German American Club on Kramers Pond Road. Their cheers could be heard during a telephone interview.

Whetsel, 63, owner of a direct marketing and graphic arts business, had successfully challenged Supervisor Sam Davis for the Democratic line in a September primary after he had a dismal first term packed with controversy. The Democrats, though, were unable to hold onto their majority on the five-member Town Board.

Two Republicans, Robert Cinque, 49, an attorney in Carmel, and Eugene Yetter Jr., an engineer and director of plant facilities for Rockland County, ran with Tendy and successfully challenged Democrats Thomas Carano, an engineering adviser for businesses, and David Spittal, 41, a business consultant.

In another race, longtime Town Justice Louis DiCarlo, running on the Republican, Independence, Conservative and Working Families lines, was re-elected, defeating Democrat Eric Harris.

In two unopposed races, Highway Superintendent Earl Smith was re-elected and Eileen Royael, a clerk for the town's special districts, was elected town clerk, succeeding Carole Hughes-DiMarco, who is retiring in December.
